Seine Arbeit ist konzeptuell; in seinen letzten Serien nutze er altes Bildmaterial zu nordischen Themen aus Archiven als Ausgangspunkt und bot mit seinen Aufnahmen Gegenentwürfe zu den darin enthaltenen Objektivierungen und Kodierungen.Zu seiner jüngsten Serie Icy Prospects inspirierte ihn die Faszination der großen Entdecker wie heutiger Nordkap-Touristen für die arktische Landschaft. Puranen bemalte ein Brett mit schwarz glänzendem Acryllack und fotografierte per Langzeitbelichtung Eislandschaften, die sich auf dieser Holzfläche spiegeln. Das Ergebnis sind extrem malerische, hochästhetische, fragmentierte Natureindrücke, in denen Untergrund, Pinselstrich und Reflexion einander untrennbar überlagern. Puranen setzt auf diese Weise das philosophische Konzept des »sublimen Schreckens« angesichts gewaltiger Natur in Beziehung zu seiner eigenen Erfahrung vom Leben in diesen Regionen und versinnbildlicht den Norden als Projektionsfläche für Fantasien und Imaginationen.

Really Wanted to Love This Book
Format: Paperback
I grew up in a time where there were very few LBGTQ books and I felt very much an anomaly. I heard great things about this book and wanted to read it. I found the book to be written super simply and not adding much to the conversation. I am glad it exists but it was super simplistic and it really doesn’t add much to the conversations around transitioning. It might be a great book for a kid just starting to figure out who they are. I left this book in a free library in a public space in hopes it gets read by someone who needs the message.

Had me in happy tears🥹
Format: Paperback
Lewis is a really funny person and I love how he discussing the way transitioning can affect multiple people, like parents, friends, and teachers.
I also feel very related to by this book despite not having the same experience he did. It’s a testament to his amazing writing that he can so well encapsulate the Transgender Experience, whilst still telling a personal story. Highly recommend.

Recommended it to others!

I discovered Lewis through TikTok and even showed a few of his videos to my mom. While I’m a bit younger than Lewis, my mom and I laughed at his videos because they reminded us of my emo teen self. While our journeys in life are hardly similar, and I still identify with my biological sex, I absolutely loved this book and told my therapist friend about it. She made a note to recommend it to some of her young clients going through their own trans journeys. Thank you Lewis for reminding me of my teenage emo escapades and making the world seem not-so-lonely for those struggling with their true selves. It’s needed today more than ever. ♥️

So cute!
Format: Paperback
Funny and so adorable! I love Lewis’s relationship with his mom! It’s so addictive I read the whole book in a single sitting! There is a few strips of nudity as well as a couple suggestive scenes (very brief), so absolutely intended for kids who have/are learning about puberty! And of course, you get what you pay for. If you buy a book written by a trans man telling his story, of course you’re going to have trans representation. Over all, so, so adorable!
