Das traditionelle Zwiebelmuster wurde 1731 von Johann Melchior Steinbrück nach Vorlagen ostasiatischer Malerei entwickelt. Ursprünglich als 'Steinbruchmuster' bezeichnet, erlangte es aufgrund der Ähnlichkeit mit der gestalterischen Aufteilung einer Zwiebelfrucht schnell seinen volkstümlichen Namen.
