Um diesem starken Cabernet Sauvignon der Central Coast Ausgewogenheit und Komplexität zu verleihen, werden die Trauben von vier ausgezeichneten AVAs ausgewählt, die eine besondere Verbundenheit zum Cabernet Sauvignon haben: Pasos Robles, Arroyo Seco, San Antonio Valley und Hames Valley. Jedes Gebiet verleiht der komplexen Persönlichkeit des Weines eine einzigartige Facette. Paso Robles ist für seine großen und kräftigen Cabernet Sauvignons bekannt, wohingegen die Trauben aus Arroyo Seco eine feste Struktur verleihen und das Fruchtige von San Antonio Valley und Hames Valley zu kräftigen Aromen nach dunkler Beere, getrockneten Früchten und Gewürzen beitragen. Um zu garantieren, dass diese verschiedenen Elemente gut integriert sind, wird der Wein im Fass gegoren und dann für 10 Monate in französischen Eichenfässern gealtert. Daraus ergibt sich ein kräftiger, vollmundiger Wein, der nur so vor intensiven Aromen strotzt. Das Bouquet weist komplexe Schichten von frisch gemahlenem Kaffee, Toast, dunkler Schokolade und Marmelade aus schwarzer Johannisbeere aus. Dies entwickelt sich auf dem Gaumen zu süßen dunklen Beeren, Vanille und Lakritz. Aufgrund der festen Tannine und den robusten Fruchtaromen passt der Wein hervorragend zu geschmorten Rippchen oder deftigen Wildgerichten. Smith & Hook hat seinen Namen von zwei ehemaligen Rinderfarmen in den Santa Lucia Highlands, die 1980 von Nicky und Gaby Hahn gekauft wurden, nachdem sie das ungenutzte Weinherstellungspotenzial der lokalen Gegend erkannt haben. Nicky wurde kürzlich von der Wine Enthusiast Zeitschrift als „Amerikanischer Weinpionier“ anerkannt und führte 1992 erfolgreich die Kampagne, um Santa Lucia als ein AVA anerkennen zu lassen. Mit einer fast vierzigjährigen Erfahrung in der Weinherstellung in der Central Coast Gegend wird der Familienbetrieb jetzt von Hahns Sohn Philip geführt.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
