Audio-Technica AT-VTAZ1 Azimuth and VTA Alignment Tool at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The AT-VTAZ1 is a dual-purpose tonearm alignment tool from Audio-Technica (Tokyo, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed for vinyl enthusiasts who want to optimise their turntable setup beyond basic cartridge alignment, the AT-VTAZ1 addresses two of the most impactful and often overlooked geometry parameters in analogue playback: VTA (vertical tracking angle) and azimuth. Getting both measurements correct is essential for accurate stereo imaging, even channel balance, minimal distortion, and long-term stylus and record preservation.

Setting VTA with the AT-VTAZ1

VTA is the angle formed between the record surface and the line running from the stylus contact point to the cantilever pivot. When VTA is correct, the cartridge body sits at the geometry its manufacturer intended, and the stylus traces the groove at the same angle the cutting lathe used during the original mastering session. Deviations introduce frequency response anomalies and accelerate uneven stylus wear. The AT-VTAZ1 provides a reference surface and measurement guide to set tonearm height accurately for any cartridge. Because record thickness varies, most notably between standard pressings and heavier 180-gram vinyl, the tool also helps users understand when a tonearm height adjustment is warranted as they move between different records in their collection. Tonearms equipped with a dedicated VTA dial benefit most from this process, as adjustments can be dialled in and repeated reliably.

Setting Azimuth with the AT-VTAZ1

Azimuth describes the rotational angle of the cartridge body as viewed straight on from the front of the stylus. A perfectly aligned cartridge sits exactly vertical, with the stylus equidistant from both walls of the record groove. Even a small azimuth error skews the channel balance, degrades stereo imaging, increases crosstalk between channels, and causes one groove wall to experience greater stylus pressure than the other, accelerating wear asymmetrically on both the stylus and the record. The AT-VTAZ1 gives the user a reliable visual and physical reference to confirm or correct azimuth, removing the guesswork that comes with eyeballing cartridge angle through the platter. For systems playing back stereo recordings, correct azimuth is one of the highest-impact adjustments available without changing any component.

Key Features

  • Dual-Purpose VTA and Azimuth Tool: A single instrument addresses both tonearm height (VTA) and cartridge rotational angle (azimuth), covering the two most commonly neglected geometry adjustments in turntable setup.
  • Accurate VTA Reference: Provides a consistent measurement baseline for setting tonearm height to match cartridge geometry, with practical guidance for accommodating different record thicknesses including 180-gram pressings.
  • Azimuth Alignment Guide: Delivers a clear reference for confirming that the stylus sits perfectly vertical and symmetrical in the groove, directly improving stereo imaging, channel balance, and crosstalk performance.
  • Stylus and Record Protection: Correct VTA and azimuth reduce uneven wear on both the stylus tip and groove walls, extending the working life of cartridges and records alike.
  • Compatible with Adjustable Tonearms: Works with any tonearm that offers VTA or tonearm height adjustment, making it equally useful for entry-level upgrades and high-end analogue systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Audio-Technica AT-VTAZ1?

The AT-VTAZ1 is a dual-purpose turntable setup tool from Audio-Technica that allows users to accurately set both VTA (vertical tracking angle) and azimuth on their tonearm and cartridge. It provides physical and visual references for both adjustments, helping to achieve correct playback geometry for improved sound quality and reduced wear on stylus and records.

What is VTA and why does it matter for vinyl playback?

VTA, or vertical tracking angle, is the angle formed between the record surface and the line from the stylus contact point to the cantilever pivot. It matters because records are cut at a specific stylus angle during mastering, and playback geometry should match that angle as closely as possible. Incorrect VTA introduces frequency response errors, softens transient detail, and causes uneven stylus wear over time. Record thickness also affects VTA; 180-gram pressings sit higher on the platter than standard pressings, shifting the effective angle and sometimes warranting a tonearm height correction.

What is azimuth alignment and how does it affect sound quality?

Azimuth is the rotational angle of the cartridge body as viewed from directly in front of the stylus. Correct azimuth means the stylus sits perfectly vertical and equidistant from both groove walls. Even a small azimuth error skews the stereo balance, degrades imaging precision, increases channel crosstalk, and applies unequal pressure to the two groove walls, wearing both the stylus and the record unevenly. Correcting azimuth is one of the highest-impact adjustments a listener can make without changing any hardware.

How does the AT-VTAZ1 compare to other alignment tools like the Fozgometer or Analogue Seduction azimuth gauge?

The AT-VTAZ1 is a mechanical reference tool for visual and physical alignment of VTA and azimuth, making it accessible and straightforward for any turntable owner. The Fozgometer is an electronic azimuth meter that measures channel crosstalk electrically via test records, which provides a more numerically precise azimuth reading but requires a test LP and signal metering. The Analogue Seduction azimuth gauge is similarly a visual reference tool. The AT-VTAZ1 covers both VTA and azimuth in a single instrument, which is an advantage for users who want a comprehensive setup tool without requiring separate test equipment for each parameter.

Can I use the AT-VTAZ1 with any turntable?

The AT-VTAZ1 is compatible with any turntable whose tonearm offers VTA or tonearm height adjustment. Most mid-range and high-end tonearms include this feature, including arms from Rega, Pro-Ject, SME, and many Audio-Technica turntable models. Tonearms without a VTA adjustment mechanism can still benefit from the azimuth function of the tool. Entry-level turntables with fixed tonearms will see limited benefit from the VTA function specifically, though the azimuth reference remains useful for any cartridge installation.

How often should I use the AT-VTAZ1 to check my alignment?

VTA and azimuth should be checked whenever a new cartridge is installed, after any tonearm or headshell adjustment, and when switching regularly between record weights such as standard and 180-gram pressings. For a stable system with a fixed cartridge, an annual check is reasonable maintenance practice. Users who frequently swap cartridges or headshells will benefit from using the AT-VTAZ1 each time to confirm geometry before a listening session.

Where can I buy the Audio-Technica AT-VTAZ1 in Toronto or Canada?

The Audio-Technica AT-VTAZ1 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Audio-Technica dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full Audio-Technica accessories range and can assist with turntable setup questions and alignment guidance for your specific cartridge and tonearm combination.

Perfect Printer for My Small Business
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I purchased the Epson ET-15000 for my crafting and apparel business and have been very pleased with its performance. The print quality is excellent, colors are vibrant, and the large ink tanks help save money over time. It handles larger print sizes with ease and has become an essential part of my workspace.

Nice large format printer which is what I needed
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I make stained glass panels and needed a printer that I could make larger copies with. I also wanted one that I could manipulate my images with. This was my best option and I love the Eco-Tank printers. After reading the reviews I made sure to add a couple years of additional warranty for my peace of mind. Finding 13 x 19 paper that was affordable was a tough challenge. I found a bunch on FB marketplace and bought everything they had to offer. This printer was very easy to set-up. I just followed the instructions and then followed what was on my computer screen. At first I thought I would have an issue connecting to Wi-Fi but when it failed on the computer, I was able to go to the printer and do it from the control panel - Easy peesey. I have used it several times since filling, charging, and installing and everything works as it should. My husband has an Eco-Tank printer and I've wanted one since he got his. I love that the ink will last a very long time and that it will be cost efficient. I am not overly interested in photo printing so this was the perfect choice for my needs. The print quality is fairly good when comparing it to my old Canon and e that there are several paper trays and ways to make copies, especially the automatic feed and the larger scanner bed.

document feeder not working on first real use.
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
Serious reliability issues and concerns. We have owned the printer for about 1 month and printed a limited amount. For the first time today I tried scanning with the document feeder. I was scanning about 12 pages that should of been 1 document. The first page scanned and then stopped. I started the scanner again and it scanned about 5 pages and then jammed. The rest of the pages were a constant jamming/not feeding fiasco. I would run to the computer and hit scan, then run to the printer and manually push on the paper as hard as i could without the paper bending. if I pushed just right i could get a few pages through without jamming. I ended up with about 6 pdf's instead of one document and constant jamming in the paper feeder. Frustrating from a brand new printer and the first time using the paper scanner. There is a clicking noise when it scans. a few of the pages fed properly but the rest had to be forced. No obvious obstructions or other issues. I tried cleaning the rollers with no success. Then attempted to reach out to Epson support. The only support option I could find was an email form that put me in a captia loop after entering all the information so I had to start over on the ticket submission. No chat support, no phone number, brand new higher priced printer with serious build/reliability issues. Frustrating.

This is a great printer. I love it.
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I’ve been using the Epson ET‑15000 for custom chip bags and ran into a huge issue with my original paper choice. The printer itself is great, but the Koala 30 lb glossy paper did not play well with the black ink at all. Even after letting my prints sit for a full two days, the black areas would still smear and come off on my fingers as soon as I started folding and assembling the bags. It was super frustrating and made it hard to trust my prints for orders. I decided to try Eshang high gloss paper instead, and the difference has been night and day. With the same Epson ET‑15000 and the same designs, the Eshang paper works like a charm. The black ink dries quickly, doesn’t rub off when handled, and holds up beautifully while I’m folding and sealing my chip bags. Colors look vibrant, the finish is nice and glossy, and I don’t have to worry about smudging anymore. If you’re using an Epson EcoTank like the ET‑15000 and struggling with black ink smearing on Koala glossy, I highly recommend switching to Eshang high gloss. It completely solved the problem for me and made my chip bag printing so much easier and more professional.
