While touring Montegrappa headquarters in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, The Pleasure of Writing had the opportunity to view the stores of raw pencrafting materials; rods of unturned Montegrappite and unfinished metals, including the last available stock of its “zebra” celluloid.
With its usage as the basis for old film stock, celluloid is literally the stuff that dreams are made of. Anyone who knows old film stock, though, knows that over time the material degrades to the point of volatility — several Hollywood studios burnt down after canisters of film reels spontaneously burst into flames.
When we learned that Montegrappa perfected a process that eliminated that volatility entirely, resulting in this gorgeous Montegrappite, we knew it was something special.
We had to have it. And in celebrating the origins of the material that gives it such a unique feel in the hand, steeped in the classics of Hollywood, we collaborated to create the Pebble Beach Noir (in keeping with the tropes of the genre this one included a case of mistaken identity, much like the damsel in distress who instead turns out to be the femme fatale*).
Featuring an 18k gold nib and gold vermeil trim, the Pebble Beach Noir is meticulously crafted from the very last available supply of this lavishly patterned, banded celluloid and modeled after the classic 1920s Venetia silhouette, creating a luxuriant writing instrument of deeply satisfying dimension. Though each one is individually numbered out of 100, only 50 of these spectacular writing instruments were produced, further adding to its mysterious allure.
*NB — The Pebble Beach Noir was first launched as the Ortocera. This is the same pen. We just found new evidence in the case.
