❃ Sometimes called the "cow killer" — a name born more from folklore than fact — Dasymutilla occidentalis delivers a sting so legendary that entomologist Justin Schmidt rated it among the most agonising on his famous pain index. Males, by contrast, possess wings and no stinger at all, and look so different from females that the two were long thought to be separate species.
❃ Velvet ants live solitary, nomadic lives, with females hunting out the nests of ground-dwelling bees and wasps to lay a single egg on each unsuspecting host larva.
