COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Understanding Drug Abuse & Addiction course. This program has been designed to equip you with the scientific, behavioural, and social knowledge required to understand how addiction develops, how drugs affect the brain and behaviour, why some individuals become addicted while others do not, and how treatment and prevention strategies can reduce harm across communities. You will explore the causes of addiction, the risk and protective factors involved, the neurological processes underlying substance use, and the personal and societal consequences of drug misuse. This course also examines evidence-based prevention programs, treatment approaches, recovery support systems, relapse dynamics, and the unique needs of different population groups affected by substance use disorders.
This course begins by examining what drug addiction is and the causes that contribute to its development. You will explore how scientific research has transformed the understanding of addiction from a moral failing into a chronic, relapsing brain disorder influenced by biology, environment, and behaviour. This section also examines why it is important to study drug use and addiction, how people of all ages experience harmful consequences, and how science provides solutions through improved prevention, treatment, and policy. You will explore why people take drugs, what makes drug use seem appealing initially, and whether individuals consciously choose ongoing drug use. This section also explains why some people become addicted while others do not, identifies risk and protective factors, and examines biological, environmental, and developmental influences that increase vulnerability.
The next learning area focuses on prevention science and the importance of adolescence in shaping lifelong behavioural outcomes. You will explore how the adolescent brain continues developing into adulthood, why this stage presents heightened vulnerability, and how early prevention efforts can interrupt pathways to addiction. This section also examines evidence-based prevention programs, how they work, what “evidence-based” means, and whether school-based programs reduce drug misuse. You will explore how prevention programs are designed, why they are effective, and how targeted approaches can reduce risk among youth, families, and communities.
A further learning area examines the neurobiology of addiction. You will explore how the parts of the brain communicate, how drugs alter normal functioning, and which brain regions are most affected by substance use. This section also explains how drugs produce pleasure, how dopamine reinforces drug-taking behaviour, and why drugs are more addictive than natural rewards. You will examine how some drugs target the brain’s pleasure centre directly, how long-term drug use alters brain circuits, and what other neurological changes occur as addiction progresses.
Another learning area focuses on the dangers and consequences of addiction. You will explore the health risks associated with drug abuse, the relationship between addiction and mental disorders, and how addiction harms not only the user but also families, communities, and workplaces. This section examines the negative effects of drug use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the dangers of second-hand smoke, and how addiction contributes to the spread of infectious diseases and risk of motor vehicle accidents. You will also explore the specific effects of commonly abused substances and how different drugs impact various body systems.
The next learning area explores addiction treatment, recovery, and relapse. You will examine whether addiction can be treated successfully, whether it can be cured, and what relapse signifies in the context of chronic illness. This section compares relapse rates for substance use disorders with those of other chronic medical conditions and outlines the principles of effective treatment. You will explore medications and devices used in treatment, behavioural therapies, and the ways high-quality programs support long-term recovery. This section also examines why drug-addicted individuals continue using substances, how effective treatment is, how long treatment usually lasts, and what factors help people remain engaged in the recovery process.
The final learning area focuses on the social structures and specialised considerations involved in supporting individuals with substance use disorders. You will explore how family and friends can influence treatment outcomes, the role of workplaces in supporting recovery, and the unique needs of women, pregnant women, adolescents, and older adults. This section also examines whether people can become addicted to prescribed medications, the difference between physical dependence and addiction, and concerns about whether medications like methadone and buprenorphine simply replace one addiction with another. You will also explore the role of exercise in treatment as part of a holistic recovery approach.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand the science of addiction, recognise risk and protective factors, describe how drugs affect the brain, explain the dangers and consequences of drug abuse, evaluate prevention and treatment strategies, interpret relapse within the framework of chronic illness, support individuals seeking treatment, and apply evidence-based principles to reduce harm and promote recovery across diverse populations.
