One hundred and twenty-five years. That is how long it took to arrive at this bottle — from John Alexander Dewar's decision in 1898 to build his first and only distillery at the foot of Perthshire's Ben Lawers, beside the Pitilie Burn whose gold-bearing waters gave the distillery its identity, to the 2023 release of the most specifically celebratory and the most richly sherried expression Aberfeldy has ever produced for its own anniversary. The distillery sits, as the brand describes it, where Perthshire's tallest mountain, deepest loch, and longest glen meet — historically and geographically at the heart of Scotland. John Dewar built it there with no expense spared, using all the latest advancements, with the ambition to craft a gold standard single malt. The 25 Year Old 125th Anniversary Sherry Cask is the clearest and the most generous statement that his ambition was justified.

The whisky spent over two decades in refill hogsheads and refill butts — the patient, slow-building primary maturation that gives Aberfeldy's Highland honey, wild strawberry, and ripe peach character the full quarter century it needs to develop fully. Then, for over a year, it rested in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez, Spain — the densest, darkest, and most flavor-imparting sherry cask type available, whose interior surfaces are saturated with the residue of Oloroso sherry production and whose contribution to the spirit that enters them is transformative rather than merely additive. Over a year in first-fill Oloroso. On top of 25 years of Highland maturation. At 46% — a full six ABV points above the 21 Year Old's 40%, the decision that multiple reviewers noted as making all the difference.

Whisky Advocate awarded 94 Points, finding a whisky that "gives 100%": black treacle, walnut, prune, malt loaf, and gingerbread on the nose, topped with cinnamon, dark chocolate, clove, peppercorn, jellied blackberry, and honey. On the palate: blueberry, black cherry, red apple, currants, sultana, baked orange, vanilla essence, red chile, pecan pie, and molasses with coffee notes. A "long mouth-coating finish of chocolate and soft spices." WhiskyNotes called it "one of the best distillery bottlings I've had — really not shy, showing a proper sherry influence." Honeycomb, dried wildflowers, marmalade, beeswax, damson, clove, candied ginger, cold coffee, raisins, and herbal notes rounding out a 25-year Highland single malt that earns the most important birthday it has ever celebrated.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Alexander Dewar — the patriarch of the Dewar whisky dynasty whose ambition to craft a "gold standard single malt" with "no expense spared" gave the distillery both its founding philosophy and its nickname. The Pitilie Burn, whose water passes alluvial gold deposits on its way to the distillery, made "The Golden Dram" the most specifically earned and the most historically rooted identity in the Highland single malt category. The distillery is owned today by John Dewar & Sons, a subsidiary of Bacardi, under Malt Master Stephanie Macleod, who has earned Aberfeldy more than 200 Gold Medals from the world's top spirits competitions across her tenure and maintained the Royal Warrant held throughout the entirety of Queen Elizabeth II's 70-year reign.

The 125th Anniversary release was conceived specifically to mark the 2023 centenary-plus-a-quarter with the most ambitious and most specifically sherry-forward limited expression the distillery had produced for its own celebration. The production approach is precise in its commitment: over two decades of primary maturation in refill hogsheads and refill butts — the patient, oak-conservative approach that builds Aberfeldy's natural honey, cereal, and dried fruit character without wood domination — followed by a finishing period of over one year in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks sourced from Jerez, Spain. First-fill Oloroso is the most intensely flavor-imparting sherry cask classification available: a barrel that has held Oloroso sherry exactly once and has never been used for any other purpose, whose interior surfaces carry the full, undiluted depth of Oloroso's dark, dried-fruit, walnut, and dark chocolate character. The year-plus finishing period allowed the 25-year-old spirit to absorb and integrate that character fully rather than simply receiving a surface-level impression from a shorter finish.

Bottled at 46% ABV — higher than any expression in the standard Aberfeldy core range — the 125th Anniversary was released as a genuinely limited edition, available in selected markets globally, never to be repeated in this specific form.

Critics Reviews

Whisky Advocate — 94 Points:
"Black treacle, walnut, prune, malt loaf, and a touch of gingerbread on the nose, topped with cinnamon, dark chocolate, clove, peppercorn, jellied blackberry, and honey. The palate revels in blueberry, black cherry, red apple, currants, sultana, baked orange, vanilla essence, red chile, pecan pie, and molasses, with a few coffee notes. This gives 100%, and benefits from a long mouth-coating finish of chocolate and soft spices."

WhiskyNotes (confirmed):
"A nice Aberfeldy, one of the best distillery bottlings I've had. Really not shy and showing a proper sherry influence. Forthcoming nose on marmalade, sweet peaches and damsons, honeycomb, light hints of cinnamon pastry and mint tea, hints of beeswax, subtle cocoa and dried wildflowers. On the mouth: sweet, initially more malty than expected, with more marmalade, red berries and orange peel, baking spice, clove, candied ginger, drops of cold coffee, raisins and herbal notes."

Aberfeldy official tasting notes:
"Nose: Highland honey, wild strawberries and ripe peaches warmed by the sun — the aroma builds with cocoa powder, creamy caramel and warming cinnamon. Palate: Delicate fruit rests on a malty, cereal base, with a hint of vanilla coffee and a long satisfying finish."

Mission Trails Wine & Spirits (confirmed):
"Deep nose of honeycomb, dried fruits, figs, and dark chocolate, lifted by hints of cinnamon and toasted almonds."

Aberfeldy (125th Anniversary context):
"Oloroso casks augment Aberfeldy's rich and fruity character, and bestow a delightful spiced note. Each of our whiskies proudly carry age statements as we believe that age is a marker of quality."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Rich mahogany amber — the year-plus in first-fill Oloroso producing a color of genuine depth that immediately signals sherry-forward maturation. The nose opens with black treacle, walnut, and prune — the Oloroso's most distinctively dark and the most specifically concentrated secondary aromatics arriving immediately and confidently. Malt loaf and gingerbread add warm, baked-good complexity. Cinnamon, dark chocolate, and clove build through the middle aromatic layers. Peppercorn adds the most specifically warming and the most intriguingly spiced secondary note. Jellied blackberry and honey add the most vivid dark fruit and the most characteristically Aberfeldy sweetness in combination. Highland honey and wild strawberries from the 25-year base carry the house character beneath the sherry influence. Marmalade, sweet peaches and damsons, honeycomb, and beeswax add further aromatic layers. Dried wildflowers and cinnamon pastry add the most delicate and the most specifically elegant secondary aromatics.

Palate
The palate "gives 100%" — the Whisky Advocate's characterization confirmed from the first sip. Blueberry, black cherry, and red apple open with vivid dark and fresh fruit intensity. Currants and sultana add dried-fruit depth. Baked orange adds warm citrus sweetness. Vanilla essence carries the oak's most refined contribution. Red chile adds a specifically and memorably warming secondary heat. Pecan pie and molasses add the most indulgent and the most richly confectionary mid-palate qualities. Coffee notes add the most complex and the most satisfyingly dark tertiary dimension. Sweet, initially malty, with marmalade, red berries, orange peel, baking spice, clove, and candied ginger building through the back half.

Finish
Long, mouth-coating, and specifically chocolate-driven — dark chocolate and soft spices carrying the close with a warmth and a persistence that confirm the first-fill Oloroso's deep structural contribution to this whisky. The finish is genuinely and specifically long — not simply pleasant but actively rewarding across its full duration.

Excellent privacy shade.
Color: Coal Black
This delivered on exactly what it promises. So happy with the quality for the value. The shades are a fabric, nylon like, that are attached with a pocket on one end and velcro that adheres around the bar on the other. This was incredibly easy and straightforward to put together. Every piece was clearly labeled, coordinated with the instruction sheet, and fit perfectly. Honestly, I wasn’t planning to leave a review but I was so impressed by how clearly labeled and well explained the instructions were that I felt compelled to note it. Especially for anyone who doesn’t like putting things together, or is used to subpar instructions, this is leagues above the rest. It’s such a simple build anyway, but after buying so many things that barely fit as they should, this stands out. It is lightweight and easy to move. Offers privacy when opened, then can be folded out of the way. It looks exactly as pictured. No complaints, it’s a solid item and worth the price.

Decent quality for the price
Color: Grey
Decent quality for the price. Other privacy screens were extremely out of my budget, but this looks and works just fine- I just needed something simple to place behind my couch to hide some clutter. It took me about a half hour to assemble, but it was easy enough. It might be due to my carpeting, but I don't trust that the screen would be stable enough to stand freely without falling. Thankfully my plan all along was to wedge the screen between the couch and a box of clutter anyway, so for me it works as l'd planned!

Overpriced but effective.
Color: Cream
I happened to get lucky and get a warehouse deal at an additional 30% discount. Even at $25, it feels a little overpriced. But it was easy to assemble and serves its purpose. If you line the Velcro up exactly, the panels sag, if you stretch past even, but where it still grips, they look pretty ok. It is very light and does fold very compact for easy storage.

Great price for a great product
Color: Coal Black
Excellent quality and great price to boot. Easy to assemble and folds up easily to be stored. We are using it as a privacy screen when we have company that needs to sleep on the couch and also to block off a hallway leading to a guest suite. It looks great and is as described in the ad
