- James Gordon Bennett, Jr.proprietor, New York Herald

It is 1868 and spiritualist TENNESSEE CLAFLIN is smart, sexy and sometimes clairvoyant. But it is her sister, VICTORIA WOODHULL who is going to make history when she becomes the first woman to run for President of the United States.

It starts with the seduction of the richest man in America. Next, they'll take New York City and the suffragist movement by storm, because together, Tennessee and Victoria are a force of Nature. Boldly ambitious, they stop at nothing, while they brush shoulders with Harriet Beecher Stowe and Susan B. Anthony, using enough chutzpah to make a lady blush.

That is, until their backstabbing family takes them to court. When their carefully spun lives unravel, out in public and in the Press, Tennessee and Victoria become the media's object of ridicule and they are pilliored with contempt.

"Unsexed " New York Herald, 1872

"Short haired women and long haired men," New York World, 1872

"Nothing more than a shameless prostitute and a Negro." The Guard, Eugene, Oregon, 1872

Told from shifting points of view and using actual news reportage from the era, Naked Truth gives a riveting inside look into the struggle for women's rights after the Civil War.

Perfect for book clubs and fans of historical fiction.

"The book is based on a true story, and Hayes writes with such care and authenticity, that the reader will likely be unsure where the history ends and the fiction begins."-KIRKUS REVIEWS

Not worth the paper it’s printed on.
Format: Paperback
I can’t say that I was expecting such a slim volume on 10,000 years of Chinese culture to be a work of rigorous scholarship, but I also wasn’t expecting it to be quite *this* dreadful. It is badly written to the point of being unreadable, and it is clear that no one thought to edit the document before publication. I made it about twenty pages in before I had to put it down. The entire thing reads like an Anthropology 101 term paper written by a first semester college freshman who hasn’t quite figured out how to back up claims with evidence yet.

It all makes sense now
Format: Kindle
This book covers Ancient Chinese History, Starting from the Settlement at the Yellow River through the Xia, Shang, Zhou, and Qin Dynasties to the Han Dynasty. This should ring a bell for some folks as this is the period around the Yellow River shows the early development of man in this region. Ancient Chinese history is a tapestry of remarkable achievements, cultural developments, and political transitions that unfolded over thousands of years. It all began with the settlement at the Yellow River, where early agricultural communities emerged around 5000 BCE. This period witnessed the gradual transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to settled farming communities, marking the foundation of Chinese civilization. From this fertile ground, the Xia Dynasty rose in the 21st century BCE, establishing the first recorded dynasty in Chinese history. Although little written evidence remains, the Xia period laid the groundwork for future dynasties, fostering advancements in agriculture, irrigation systems, and early forms of government. The subsequent Shang Dynasty (16th–11th century BCE) witnessed great cultural achievements, including the development of a complex writing system and the creation of magnificent bronze artworks. It was during this era that the concept of the Mandate of Heaven emerged, which stated that rulers' legitimacy depended on their ability to govern effectively. Following the fall of the Shang Dynasty, the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE) emerged and introduced the feudal system, characterized by a decentralized government. This era saw the flourishing of philosophy, with notable thinkers like Confucius and Laozi influencing Chinese thought for centuries to come. The Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) unified China under the rule of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, bringing about remarkable political and administrative reforms. It standardized currency, measurements, and writing systems, and constructed the Great Wall of China. Although short-lived, the Qin Dynasty paved the way for the subsequent Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) was a period of significant cultural and technological advancements. It expanded the empire's territorial reach, established the Silk Road, and embraced Confucianism as the official ideology. The Han Dynasty left a lasting legacy, shaping the Chinese state and society for centuries. Through these pivotal dynasties, Ancient Chinese history witnessed the development of a rich and enduring civilization, with contributions that continue to influence the world today.
