Lainie Chait was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1991 at the age of 19. At the time of diagnosis, there were three roads to go down - avoidance, acceptance or rebellion. Avoidance was her first choice. Falling in the shower, brain jerks and muscle twitches when she was 14 was the beginning of something 'not quite right' about her early teenage years. She hid these symptoms from family and friends for three years in the hope that they were just 'growing pains'.

As she started reaching the age of independence (18 in Australia) and started to drink, stay up late and go out partying, these 'growing pains' turned into a seizure condition that could no longer be ignored. Eventually doctors, diagnoses and medicines were brought into the equation.

She tried acceptance but at the time it wasn't the right fit, as the very thought of taming down her young, fun life and replace it with medicine, early nights and mature personal decisions was just too hard to fathom.

Rebellion then became her main focus and she achieved this by partying, staying up late and ignoring the triggers. This mindset carried with it an enormous amount of embarrassment and shame. She constantly felt like a failure after each of the 250+ Grand Mal seizures she endured over 25 years.

But she wasn't just rebelling against a diagnosis; she was rebelling against a system that has the capacity to make you feel better but at a price that also keeps you in a place of perpetual illness. She needed to know why she had epilepsy and the only way she was going to find this out was to take herself off all the meds and research it, live it, feel it and document it for herself.

She did this much to the horror of her doctors, friends and family. She went on a journey to get to know her brain and what makes it tick and glitch. The journey was about finding out just how much control she did and didn't have over her seizures.

The path of prescription medication and the side effects were just as bad as having the actual seizures, sometimes worse. She felt that the medical industry wasn't able to look at her on a holistic level. By this she meant physically, emotionally, mentally and physiologically and so she embarked on her own research to get a complete diagnosis that she was satisfied with.

Lainie Chait has been seizure free for the past 2.5 years. It took 25 years of life experience to get to the point where she was able to share her story, both painful and pleasant. She simply wasn't going to accept that the physical symptoms being displayed was a fate to live with for the rest of her life.

The reality is that she could have come to these conclusions 20 years ago and taken a much more mature approach to herself, her condition and the part she had played in the world and the outcome might have had a lot less suffering in it, but she wouldn't have learnt what a powerful, resilient, focused woman she was when something as important as your own life and future is nearly taken from you due to misdiagnosis and wrong medications.

Life-saver for hands in pain
Size: 5.1 Ounce (Pack of 2)
This is my favorite hand cream. We're in PA and I keep a tube of this by the kitchen sink, in my bedroom, the bathroom, and in my car. I use it all the time and it saves my hands. I discovered it by chance at a store one time and I've tried many products (used to work in Healthcare so was constantly hand-washing). I like O'Keefe's Working Hands all right, and Gold Bond healing hand cream used to be my favorite, but this replaces both. It's so helpful for my 5 year old, too, whose hands get super dry and cracked if we don't keep up with this. It's great stuff. Ever since I discovered it, I haven't been able to find it in stores again. It's always out of stock, so I guess others have figured it out as well!

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)
