🖼️ Midcentury North African Abstract Expressionist Oil on Paper Painting — Signed 1964

This Midcentury North African Abstract Expressionist Oil on Paper Painting is a rare and powerful work. Signed and dated 1964, it reflects the deep connection between modernist abstraction and African spiritual art. The piece blends emotional depth, layered textures, and strong cultural symbolism. It stands as both a collectable item and a visual centrepiece.

The painting captures the spirit of mid-20th-century African modernism. It uses rich colour, bold form, and expressive brushwork. Its totemic figure draws from tribal influences while echoing modern European art movements.

✍️ Style and Influence: A Bridge Between Cultures

This abstract oil painting shows clear ties to North African tribal art. At the same time, it reflects the spiritual depth of Byzantine religious icons. The figure’s tall, narrow form suggests ritual or sacred presence. It is not just a human form, but something greater—perhaps a symbol, relic, or protector.

European artists in the 20th century, like Modigliani and Wifredo Lam, were inspired by this same spiritual and symbolic power. They blended tribal art with modernist ideas, just as this piece does.

🎨 Technique and Texture: Oil on Paper with Expressionist Energy

The artist uses thick oil paint on paper to create strong texture. This gives the surface a raw, handmade feel. The brushstrokes are bold and layered. These marks recall the impasto technique found in postwar art, such as Art Brut and Tachisme.

This method is not about fine detail. Instead, it captures mood and meaning. The surface feels ancient, like it has survived time. This tactile style links the work to both tradition and innovation.

🎭 Colour and Symbolism: Earth Tones with a Sacred Pulse

Earthy colours dominate the painting. Deep brown, olive green, and warm ochre give it a grounded, organic look. These tones feel timeless, like old stone or aged wood. They reflect nature, spirit, and the passage of time.

Red and yellow accents stand out. They focus the viewer’s eye and suggest energy or ritual power. These colours may hint at blood, fire, or spiritual force. The central figure seems to glow from within, as if carrying hidden meaning.

🧍 Form and Composition: Totemic Figures in African Abstract Art

The figure appears both human and symbolic. It is upright, still, and strong—like a guardian or icon. The segmented body suggests layers, both visual and symbolic. Rounded forms meet angular shapes, creating contrast and rhythm.

This mix of structure and flow gives the piece life. It doesn’t tell a story directly. Instead, it invites reflection. The tall format enhances this feeling of reverence and monumentality.

🔎 Provenance Story

We discovered this powerful abstract painting on a sourcing trip through a private archive in Brighton, home to a collector of postwar African and Middle Eastern modernism. The owner, an anthropologist turned gallerist, had lived in Morocco throughout the 1960s and ’70s, immersed in the art and political movements of the time. His walls were a time capsule — part museum, part manifesto.

This piece was tucked away in a flat file drawer, carefully wrapped, signed and dated 1964. It had never been framed, never been shown — a sleeper in the collection. The bold, totemic figure struck us immediately: part ritual, part abstraction, charged with energy and stillness in equal measure.

The painting was acquired directly from the gallerist’s estate, accompanied by other works from North Africa and the Levant. While its maker remains unnamed, the symbolism, brushwork, and emotional gravity place it squarely in the lineage of mid-century African modernism — spiritual, gestural, and deeply personal.

This isn’t decorative abstraction. It’s cultural memory made visible.

Very good looking accurate watch but,
Color: Black
As others have said buttons very hard to operate. I'm not sure if it's by design or if they released an abnormally tough run, but they do require intent and strength to push. On the bright side, you'll never (and I repeat NEVER) accidentally press the button and activate something. You have to try hard to push them intentionally, I don't think it's even possible to accidentally press one. The look and feel of the watch are great though and I think the band is actually better quality than most Casio bands. Overall the price increase over similar casios gets you - better light, nice slim profile, and a better band, as well as buttons that won't accidentally push (because they're so tough to lol)

Defective watch - after 1.5 months of use, time automatically reset every day
Color: Teal/Brown
I'd only had the watch for about 1.5 months before the time started to automatically reset without any apparent reason. I would set it to the correct time, then before the day was done, I would look down and see that the watch time was drastically incorrect. I've seen at least one other review on Amazon describing this same problem with the Atlantis. Other than that, as other reviewers have mentioned, the buttons are a bit hard to press but that isn't a dealbreaker in my opinion (you get used to it). If you like the way the watch looks, and want a simple, smaller, lightweight digital watch, the Atlantis is adequate, especially at this price point - assuming it's not defective like mine.

It’s an “OK” watch.
Color: Black
I just received this watch. The watch fits well and is comfortable, light weight and is thinner than others I have had, which I actually like. There is no manual and trying to find one on line is a tall order. I just fiddled around with it to figure it out. Still working on some of the features. It apparently has two time settings which is good if you travel to other time zones without having to reset your time. Just hit the button. Speaking of the buttons, they are pretty tough to push. The display is so-so; some may have difficulty reading it although the numbers for the time are larger. It’s a decent watch but being worth $42 remains to be seen. I was a bit unhappy to receive the watch in an Amazon paper bag envelope. The box was crushed but the watch was in tact. It really should have been shipped in a box.

Perfect watch
Color: Black
This is the perfect watch for me. No negative issues at all. It's light, comfortable, easy to read, accurate, and tells me exactly what I want to know, even in the dark. I like that the seconds can be reset to zero with the push of a button. That makes it easy to set the time to the second. Battery replacement is simple. No pressing the back on with a watch press. I will agree the buttons are a bit stiff, but then I can't accidentally press 'em by flexing my wrist.
