Our Lapsang Souchong Black Tea is from the Fujian Province in China. This tea is a large, bold, full-bodied whole leaf with a smoky flavor from drying over pinewood fires.
This special smoked black tea has a very distinctive flavor and aroma.
The term “souchong” means sub-variety. This is a sub-variety of black tea from the Wuyi Mountains, where thick pine forests and heavy mists provide ideal environments for growing top-quality tea.
Legend claims that the smoking process was discovered by accident. An army unit (during the Qing dynasty!) camped in a tea factory filled with leaves waiting to be processed. When the workers returned, it was too late to follow the usual procedures. So, they dried the leaves over open pinewood fires to hasten the process and created the sensational tea we know as Lapsang.
You may have heard other equally fascinating legends, which only add to the intrigue of this tea, often described as an acquired taste!
It can be served with milk and/or sugar or straight up with a good book. 20 to 25 cups of tea can be made from 2 oz of loose-leaf tea.
Brewing Instructions for Lapsang Souchong Black Tea
Steep this tea multiple times. Loose-leaf teas have far more flavor than traditional tea bags due to their superior quality and freshness. Tea strength is a personal decision, so please experiment to determine your preferences.
Use boiling water and allow your Lapsang Souchong Black Tea to steep as little as 2 minutes or as much as 6 minutes. For each of the following steeps, use boiling water and double the steep time.
Lapsang Souchong Black Tea can be steeped at least three times. Depending on the steep times, as many as six times. Also, consider blending the first steep with the following steeps to balance the tea; if you do not want to drink all the tea, store it in the fridge for wonderful iced tea.
