Background
CD82 protein, also known as KAI1, is a member of the tetraspanin family of proteins. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a significant role in various biological processes such as cell adhesion, migration, and apoptosis. CD82 is widely expressed in normal tissues and has been identified as a metastasis suppressor in many types of cancer. It can form complexes with integrins and other tetraspanins to regulate intercellular adhesion and signaling. For example, CD82 inhibits β-catenin tyrosine phosphorylation and stabilizes E-cadherin-β-catenin complexes at the cell membrane, which helps to limit cancer cell dissociation from the primary cancer nest and metastasis. Additionally, CD82 is also found to be expressed in human trophoblast cells and plays a role in inhibiting trophoblast invasion and migration during early pregnancy.
