Kate Bush-inspired 'Running Up That Hill' Art PrintI know that an entire generation will now associate this song with 'Stranger Things', and I think they did an amazing job with narrative congruence in placing that song in that show, but for Gen Xers, it had a rich life before that. I know that an entire generation will now associate this song with 'Stranger Things', and I think they did an amazing job with narrative congruence in placing that song in that show, but for Gen Xers, it had a rich life before that. As soon as I considered ‘hills’, ‘trying to achieve the summit of a hill’, ‘bullets’, ‘thunder’, and ‘tearing me asunder”, I immediately landed on Terrence Malick’s ‘The Thin Red Line’, a fantastic WWII war movie largely concerned with the assault on Hill 210 on the island of Guadalcanal. It helps that it has a brilliant movie poster.
There’s some great musical tension in this Kate Bush’s song, driven by the relentless drums underpinning Kate’s prescient wailing about ‘making a deal with god’ (never a good idea), and it’s congruent with the tension in the movie, when the company embarks on its frontal assault of the heavily-defended hill. Both texts build up to an intense catharsis.
I must confess I always get ‘Running Up That Hill’ and ‘Cloudbusting’ confused, in part because the great video for ‘Cloudbusting’ is entirely set on a hill (on which there’s a lot of running). Still, I ought to know better.
For the fan of 80s new wave, and if you value a non-Stranger Things take on the song, there's a range of sizes and styles available: five sizes across each of poster prints, stretched canvas, and framed, ready-to-hang; also customized for the Symfonisk Sonos IKEA wall speaker.
