Victron ET340 Energy Meter: Precision Three-Phase Monitoring for ESS and Solar Integration

Advanced Energy Transducer for Grid, PV, and Generator Measurement

The Victron ET340 Energy Meter is a high-accuracy three-phase energy transducer engineered for seamless integration with Victron Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and GX devices. Designed to monitor consumption and generation across all three phases, it provides the critical data needed to optimise self-consumption, manage grid feed-in, and balance loads in residential and commercial installations. With a maximum current rating of 65 A per phase and direct connection capability, this meter is a reliable choice for electricians and system integrators seeking precise energy data without external current transformers.

Unlike generic energy meters, the ET340 offers Class 1 accuracy (EN62053-21) and ±0.5% RDG for current and voltage, ensuring your system makes decisions based on trustworthy measurements. Its dual RS485 ports enable flexible wired or wireless (Zigbee) communication with the Victron Color Control GX or Venus OS, allowing real-time monitoring and control via the VRM portal. Whether you are measuring grid import/export, PV inverter output, or AC generator performance, this meter delivers the granularity required for advanced energy management.

Key Features

  • Three-phase direct measurement up to 65 A per phase, eliminating the need for external CTs in most residential applications
  • Dual RS485 ports for daisy-chaining or redundant communication paths, supporting Modbus RTU protocol
  • Self-powered from the measured voltage (208–400 VAC L-L), simplifying installation and reducing component count
  • Compact 3-DIN module width (54 mm) for space-efficient DIN-rail mounting in distribution boards
  • Bidirectional metering captures both consumption and generation, essential for ESS and net metering setups
  • Wide operating temperature range (-20 to +65 °C) and IP20 front protection for indoor environments

Seamless Integration with Victron Ecosystem

The ET340 is purpose-built for the Victron GX ecosystem. Connect it directly to a Color Control GX via the RS485 to USB interface (cable lengths up to 100 metres supported) or use the optional Zigbee module for wireless communication. Once connected, the meter appears automatically in the GX device list, enabling features like:

  • ESS Grid Metering: Use as the primary grid meter for ESS systems, enabling precise control of grid set points and preventing backfeed.
  • PV Inverter Monitoring: Measure the output of single or three-phase PV inverters, allowing the GX device to log performance and adjust charging strategies.
  • Generator Metering: Monitor AC generator output to manage generator start/stop logic and track fuel consumption.
  • Dual-Function Wiring: In single-phase systems, a single ET340 can simultaneously measure the grid and a PV inverter on separate phases, reducing hardware costs.

For installers, the meter's clear terminal layout and included wiring diagrams simplify commissioning. The front-facing LEDs provide immediate visual feedback on power status and Modbus data transmission, aiding troubleshooting.

Built for Accuracy and Reliability

At the core of the ET340 is a proven Carlo Gavazzi measurement engine, delivering Class 1 kWh accuracy and ±0.5% reading accuracy for current and voltage. This level of precision ensures that your ESS responds correctly to small load changes, maximising self-consumption and reducing unnecessary grid draw. The meter's self-power supply design draws energy directly from the voltage inputs, eliminating the need for an auxiliary power source and reducing potential points of failure.

The robust DIN-rail enclosure is rated IP20 for front protection, suitable for installation in electrical cabinets and meter boxes. With an operating temperature range of -20 to +65 °C and humidity tolerance up to 90% non-condensing, it performs reliably in typical Australian indoor environments, from coastal garages to inland switch rooms.

Applications

  • Residential ESS: Pair with Victron MultiPlus-II and GX device for full home energy management, including time-of-use optimisation and grid outage backup.
  • Commercial Solar: Monitor three-phase solar production and building consumption to verify system performance and identify energy waste.
  • Off-Grid Systems: Measure generator input to automate start/stop based on battery state of charge, reducing runtime and maintenance.
  • Retrofit Projects: Add energy visibility to existing switchboards without major rework, thanks to the compact DIN-rail form factor.

By choosing the Victron ET340, you gain a meter that is fully supported by Victron's documentation, firmware updates, and global community. It is not a generic Modbus meter requiring complex configuration; it is recognised natively by Venus OS, reducing setup time and compatibility risks.

Take Control of Your Energy Data

Equip your Victron system with the ET340 Energy Meter and unlock the full potential of your installation. Whether you are commissioning a new ESS or upgrading an existing setup, this meter provides the accurate, real-time data needed to make informed energy decisions. Add the Victron ET340 to your order today and start monitoring with confidence.

Sounds great.
Just received my Onkyo TX-NR 7100, watched a few YouTube videos before it arrived, so set up was easy. Ran accuEQ, I am getting new front speakers so I’ll wait to run Dirac. After accuEQ, I still had to make a few adjustments, to the speaker levels and especially the sub. It set my subwoofer way too low. As of right now having no problems with Bluetooth. I’ve only listened to music so far, can’t wait to watch a movie. For now I have a 5.1.2. System, getting new fronts, the Klipsch r51-m’s will go to the rear surround and Klipsch r41-m’s will be my height speakers in a 5.1.4 system. So far loving this avr. Update 2: Just calibrated with Dirac for the 6th time. They tell you if you sit in a recliner, reclined measure with it reclined. Well I measured with the chair in its upright position. It makes a huge difference I hear the surrounds much better. Btw I listen to all channel stereo, I know audiophiles say it sucks, however I listened to 2 channel stereo for 20 years, when there was nothing else. I didn’t buy a 9 channel avr to listen to 2 channel stereo. Like Randy the cheap audio man says “ audiophiles aren’t always right. If it sounds good to you, that’s all that matters.” So try calibrating in the upright position, or if you sit on a stationary chair or couch, try positioning the mic slightly forward of your listening position. It makes a huge difference. Hope this helps, enjoy. Update: Ok bought Klipsch rp-600m speakers for the front with 52c center. 51m surrounds, 41m rear heights. Polk owm3 front heights. Why Polk? Lighter easy to hang and as height speakers they are only there for atmos. Ran Dirac live, the application does what it would take several hours to make it sound like it does, if I even could get it to sound so good. Apple TV 4K with my Hisense U8K. The google tv interface is ok, but Apple TV is faster and easier. The Onkyo 7100 is a gem, runs pretty warm but I have it out in the open. If you are going to put in a cabinet I suggest a fan. Very happy with the whole system.

I liked them. They really lock down on the speaker wire to make a firm connection. They seem well made and are easy to install. My system sounds great.

Tips broke in the binding post
Size: 12 Pairs / 24 pcs, Size: 12 Pairs / 24 pcs
UPDATE: Two tips broke off when unplugging them from the binding post and are now lodged in. Inexcusable and an utterly poor product. Solid connection in the binding post with no wobble or wiggle. They require some force to insert into the binding post, but once they're in they remain snug. I also tried removing and reinserting a few times and the connection remained solid. I've used other plugs in the past that have a softer tip and easily deform after one or two insertions. These do not have that issue.
