From the acclaimed translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, hailed as "the premier Russian-to-English translators of the era" (The New Yorker), comes a masterful translation of the first great prison memoir: Fyodor Dostoevsky's fictionalized account of his life-changing penal servitude in Siberia. "A master of psychological portraiture. . . . A testament to the power of the human will, the way it can marshal patience and imagination and hope."--The New Criterion In 1849, Dostoevsky was sentenced to four years at hard labor in a Siberian prison camp for participating in a socialist discussion group. The novel he wrote after his release, based on notes he smuggled out, not only brought him fame, but also founded the tradition of Russian prison writing. Notes from a Dead House (sometimes translated as The House of the Dead) depicts brutal punishments, feuds, betrayals, and the psychological effects of confinement, but it also reveals the moments of comedy and acts of kindness that Dostoevsky witnessed among his fellow prisoners. To get past government censors, Dostoevsky made his narrator a common-law criminal rather than a political prisoner, but the perspective is unmistakably his own. His incarceration was a transformative experience that nourished all his later works, particularly Crime and Punishment. Dostoevsky's narrator discovers that even among the most debased criminals there are strong and beautiful souls. His story is, finally, a profound meditation on freedom: "The prisoner himself knows that he is a prisoner; but no brands, no fetters will make him forget that he is a human being."Shipping Notes

Perfect for Dry Heels
I'm at the house all day and run around without shoes on, so these fit my needs perfectly. I bought these socks because I'm applying lotion to my dry heels and wanted to cover them up afterwards. At the same time, I didn't want to cover up my toes because that's a good way to get toenail fungus.
The quality is good, and I like that these socks aren't real thick or too thin. They seem like they'll hold up well.

Avid runner loves these socks
My sister, who runs every day, specifically requested these for a present because they are comfortable, well-made, and durable.

Too tight
The socks are soft and pretty. They fit further down on the foot than I expected. However, they do not cover toe halves, which is what I was looking for. They were not comfortable, but they would be good for getting a pedicure.

Cute and Comfortable
I have now purchased at least three packs of these Freetoes, so that says something; I love to wear flip flops and sandals but while walking some distance they can chafe and cause foot issues so I use the socks as a buffer, they are attractive and comfortable, especially in warmer months, and have solved the chafing issue. Highly recommend!

GOOD IDEA, BAD RESULTS
As u walk it slides up to your ankle since there's nothing to secure it between the toes, ends up looking like you have a ankle bracelet. Fabric is NOT soft and comfy. Ended up giving them all away to the my cousin that was traveling with me, she had forgotten her socks so she was desperate for anything. She had the same problem as I but because she is obese so the socks fit snug on her so took a bit longer to hike up to her ankle. Im medium built.. I purchased 2 sets so it was a waste of my hard earned money.
