Patchouli PlantWe consider Patchouli a houseplant here in Tennessee since it's hardy only in zones 10 12. Originating from Asia, the patchouli plant (and the reddish essential oil obtained from it). You can make a harvest of the leaves to produce a patchouli sachet, or you can extract your own essential oil if you have a distiller. The leaves emit fleeting whiffs of the patchouli esters, and the flowers are strongly aromatic. Patchouli leaves are not safe to eat

You can make a harvest of the leaves to produce a patchouli sachet, or you can extract your own essential oil if you have a distiller.  The leaves emit fleeting whiffs of the patchouli esters, and the flowers are strongly aromatic. Patchouli leaves are not safe to eat because they contain toxic compounds that can harm your digestive system.

Care

The plant prefers full to part shade, moist, rich soils, humidity. It thrives under good care but fades fast with neglect–it needs watering almost daily, has zero tolerance for frost and will sunburn if not protected by shade.

Growth Habit

Patchouli will grow to be about 24" H & 36" W at maturity.

Toxicity

While not considered highly toxic, patchouli, especially in its essential oil form, can be harmful to pets; particularly cats. as it can irritate their skin and respiratory system if inhaled, so it's best to use caution and keep it out of their reach; always dilute patchouli oil significantly before using around animals.
