Esta es una historia de un joven soldado valenciano, músico, que durante la guerra de España se une a la banda de música de la División 46, mandada por el mítico El Campesino. Su vida se va entrecruzando con la del famoso músico cubano y brigadista internacional Julio Cueva, que es nombrado director de la banda divisionaria. A lo largo de la novela, de forma paralela a la vida y vicisitudes del joven valenciano, van apareciendo distintos personajes de ese momento histórico, políticos y militares republicanos, y se relatan algunos episodios singulares del aquel contexto, como el asesinato del dirigente comunista Andreu Nin o las acciones de las brigadas internacionales, junto a la azarosa y estridente deriva vital de El Campesino. Personajes relevantes como el presidente del Gobierno Juan Negrín o el mismo presidente de la República Manuel Azaña ocupan su espacio en la trama de la novela. Una incursión a la historia más importante de la España del siglo XX, desde la perspectiva del recorrido por la vida de un sencillo joven que se ve arrastrado a la guerra, aunque imbuido de sencillos y nobles ideales.
