Conspicuous Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus)Overview
The Conspicuous Angelfish, often called the Conspic Angelfish, is one of the most striking and sought-after marine angelfish in the hobby. It features a cream-to-yellow body framed by a thick black outline, a deep blue/black mask over the face, and vivid blue edging on the fins. Growing up to 30 cm (12 inches), this species is rare, expensive, and considered a showpiece fish for advanced aquarists.
OriginNative to the Southwest Pacific Ocean, especially around Australia (Lord Howe Island, New South Wales) and New Caledonia. Found at depths of 10–50 m, usually near outer reef slopes and rocky reef zones.
FeedingIn the wild, this angelfish feeds primarily on sponges and tunicates. In captivity, it requires a carefully managed, varied diet:
- High-quality angelfish formulas containing sponge matter
- Frozen mysis and enriched brine shrimp
- Chopped seafood (clam, shrimp, squid)
- Marine algae and spirulina-based foods
Offer 2–3 small feedings per day to maintain condition and colouration.
Tank MatesBest kept with robust but peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Suitable companions include:
- Larger tangs and surgeonfish
- Butterflyfish
- Other large angelfish (in very large aquariums with careful introductions)
- Wrasses and groupers
Avoid small, timid species that may be harassed or outcompeted.
AggressionSemi-aggressive. While not overly belligerent, Conspic Angelfish may become territorial, especially toward other angelfish or similarly shaped species. Providing plenty of live rock and hiding spaces helps reduce aggression.
Experience LevelAdvanced. This angelfish is best left to experienced marine keepers due to its high cost, dietary requirements, and need for pristine, stable water conditions. A large, mature reef or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) system is essential.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- Hardness (dKH): 8–12
- Tank Size: Minimum 180 gallons (680L), larger recommended for long-term success
Plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding is crucial, along with open swimming space.
Reef CompatibilityNot reef safe. Like other large angelfish, the Conspic will nip at corals, sponges, and clams, making it unsuitable for reef systems.
