Victron 500A/50mV Shunt: Precision Current Measurement for BMV Battery Monitors

Engineered for Accurate Energy Monitoring in 12V, 24V, and 48V Systems

The Victron 500A/50mV shunt is a high-precision current sensing resistor designed specifically for Victron BMV battery monitors and compatible SmartShunt devices. With a 500 A continuous rating and a 50 mV output at full scale, it provides the reliable, low-resistance measurement path essential for accurate state-of-charge tracking, energy consumption logging, and system diagnostics. This shunt is the critical interface between your battery bank and your monitoring electronics, converting high DC currents into a proportional millivolt signal that your BMV interprets to deliver real-time data.

Unlike generic shunts that may introduce measurement drift or thermal instability, this Victron shunt is built with solid brass terminal blocks and a precision manganin resistive element. The result is consistent accuracy across a wide temperature range, minimal voltage drop, and long-term reliability in demanding mobile, marine, and off-grid installations. Whether you are upgrading an existing system or replacing a worn component, this shunt ensures your Victron battery monitor performs at its best.

Key Features

  • 500 A / 50 mV rating for high-current DC systems up to 500 A continuous
  • Solid brass terminal blocks with M10 x 15 studs (approx. 3/8"-16) for secure, low-resistance connections to heavy-duty lugs
  • Precision manganin resistive element ensures stable, accurate measurements with minimal thermal drift
  • Integrated M4 side sensing screws for direct voltage sense wire connection, eliminating signal errors from high-current path voltage drops
  • Insulated black mounting base with pre-drilled 6.5 mm holes on 101.8 mm centres for secure, isolated installation
  • Compact footprint (121 x 25.6 x 35 mm) fits easily into crowded battery compartments and electrical panels
  • Compatible with all Victron BMV series (BMV-700, BMV-702, BMV-712) and SmartShunt models requiring a 50 mV shunt

Why a Quality Shunt Matters

In any battery monitoring system, the shunt is the foundation of measurement accuracy. A poorly constructed shunt can introduce resistance variations that lead to incorrect current readings, causing your battery monitor to misreport state of charge. Over time, this can result in undercharging or over-discharging your expensive battery bank, shortening its lifespan. The Victron 500A/50mV shunt uses a manganin alloy resistive element, chosen for its extremely low temperature coefficient of resistance. This means the shunt maintains its calibrated accuracy even as ambient temperatures fluctuate, a common challenge in engine rooms, uninsulated battery boxes, and outdoor enclosures.

The solid brass blocks and M10 stud terminals (approx. 3/8"-16) are designed to accept heavy-gauge cable lugs up to 4/0 AWG (approx. 95 mm²), minimising connection resistance and heat buildup at high currents. The separate M4 sensing screws allow you to connect the voltage sense wires directly to the shunt, bypassing the high-current path. This Kelvin (4-wire) connection method eliminates the voltage drop across the main terminals from the measurement, a critical detail for accurate low-voltage monitoring in 12V, 24V, and 48V systems.

Installation and Compatibility

This shunt is a direct replacement for the standard shunt supplied with Victron BMV-700, BMV-702, and BMV-712 battery monitors. It is also compatible with the Victron SmartShunt series when a separate 50 mV shunt is required. Installation is straightforward: mount the shunt on a non-conductive surface using the two 6.5 mm mounting holes, connect the battery negative cable to one brass block and all loads/chargers to the other, then attach the sense wires from your BMV or SmartShunt to the M4 screws. The insulated base prevents accidental short circuits, and the compact dimensions allow placement in tight spaces.

For systems operating at higher voltages, this shunt is suitable for use in 12V, 24V, and 48V DC systems, provided the connected monitoring device supports the system voltage. The 50 mV output is standard across the Victron BMV range, ensuring plug-and-play compatibility without the need for configuration changes.

Built for Harsh Environments

While the shunt itself is not IP65 rated (the BMV or SmartShunt enclosure provides environmental protection), its robust construction with corrosion-resistant brass terminals and a durable phenolic base makes it suitable for use in marine, automotive, and off-grid environments. The large terminal surface area and secure bolted connections resist vibration and thermal cycling, common in mobile installations.

Note: This is a passive component and does not include Bluetooth or any electronics. It must be paired with a Victron BMV head unit or SmartShunt to function as a complete battery monitor.

Get Accurate Battery Insights

Ensure your Victron battery monitor delivers the precise data you need to manage your energy system effectively. Order the Victron 500A/50mV shunt today and maintain the accuracy and reliability of your power monitoring setup, whether on the water, on the road, or off the grid.

Needs editing
Format: Kindle
Cute storyline and promising characters, but the lack of editing is painful to read. I would love to read an edited version.

Monstrously Sweet
Format: Kindle
This book packs an emotional punch, especially if you’ve experienced childhood trauma (particularly abuse and/or neglect). Alexandra creates these three strong protectors who love her and will do anything to make her feel happy and safe. She started out drawing them when she was a small child, and then transitioned to stories as she grew up. Lucien, Elwin, and Kylo look frightening in their monster forms, but it’s clear that they would never hurt Alexandra, and she has never felt afraid of them. They have very distinct personalities that we get to know better throughout the book. The love and devotion they have for Alexandra is sweet and unwavering. This is a fantastic and creative story! The world-building is wonderful - it’s a shared world with M. Sinclair, and takes place at a university for supernatural beings. The additional world-building within Alexandra’s story added even more depth and intrigue. The spicy times were 🥵 and it’s more of a medium burn, but it works with the characters and I expect that it’ll pick up quite a bit in the next books. Monsters Within has a unique way of addressing mental health issues that can come from being abused and neglected. There are some flashbacks to Alexandra’s childhood that provide some insight but they don’t go into heavy details. I absolutely adored this book and can’t wait for more!

One of us
Format: Kindle
Alexandra is literally one of us. She's just lucky her fictional men became a reality hahaha. This was a good start to what I know is going to be a great series. This was fast paced and kept me entertained. Im ready for the chaos to slow down a little bit so we can get more into the character development. There's so much happening, I feel like we hardly know anything about anyone BUT that's why this is a series so let's get to the next one!

Alex and her monsters
Format: Kindle
A somewhat intriguing story that did drag a little despite giving us some world building. The explanations just took too long even if we don’t get the full picture yet. I will say the story does have some humor and is very hot. I may pick up the second book at some point.
