Fitting and handling
Allow the timber to acclimatise inside the building for at least 48 hours before fixing, particularly in new builds where humidity levels may be higher than normal. Fix to a plumb, solid substrate using cut nails or finish nails for traditional framing, or a suitable grab adhesive combined with pins on dry-lined walls. Apply a primer coat before painting, or a suitable wood stain or oil if a natural finish is required, ensuring all end grain is sealed to minimise moisture movement.
FAQ
What is the difference between nominal and finished size on redwood skirting?
Nominal size is the rough sawn measurement before machining. Once the face and edges are planed smooth, the finished size is slightly smaller. For example, a 100mm nominal board finishes at 95mm. Always use the finished size when planning reveals or matching to existing mouldings.
Can square edge redwood skirting be painted with standard emulsion or do I need a specialist paint?
Redwood should be primed first with a wood primer or an all-purpose solvent-based primer before applying any top coat. Standard satin or gloss paint bonds well once the primer is dry. Bare redwood is not suitable for direct application of emulsion.
Is redwood skirting more durable than MDF skirting?
Solid redwood is harder, takes fixings more securely, and is less susceptible to swelling from minor moisture exposure than MDF. It can be re-sanded and re-painted over time, making it a longer-lasting choice in most domestic settings.
