There's a particular satisfaction in the slow, methodical work of clearing a paved path or patio of the small green invaders that have settled into its cracks. Done with the right tool, it's almost meditative — half an hour with a good knife, a kneeling pad, and the radio on, and a tired-looking patio comes back to itself. Done with the wrong tool, it's a knuckle-scraping ordeal you put off until next year.

This is the right tool. A slimline, properly made block paving knife from Burgon & Ball — the Sheffield toolmaker behind several of our most-loved tools — supplied to us through our partners at AllotMate, who curate proper, well-made tools for gardeners and allotmenteers who'd rather buy once.

It carries the official Royal Horticultural Society endorsement and a lifetime guarantee. Two things that don't sit together by accident.

What it's for

Block paving knives are designed for the very specific job of clearing the narrow gaps between paving, where small weeds, moss, soil, and debris build up and gradually take a patio from "swept" to "tired." Larger tools won't fit; smaller tools won't cut. This sits in the goldilocks zone.

The slimline stainless steel head has two cutting features that work together:

  • A sharpened 90-degree angled edge for scraping and cutting through stubborn growth — running along the joint between paving slabs lifts established weeds and moss in a single pass
  • A fine hooked tip for the corners, awkward crevices, and small spaces where the angled edge can't reach — particularly useful around drains, edging stones, and where paving meets walls

Ideal for block paving, slabs, patios, paths, driveways, and any hard-landscaped area where weeds and moss are quietly establishing themselves.

How to use it well

A few small habits make the work easier and more effective:

  • Work after rain or watering — soft, damp soil between paving slabs releases its weeds far more easily than dry, sun-baked compaction
  • Run the angled edge along the full length of a joint in one steady pull rather than chipping in short sections — you'll lift roots cleanly rather than snapping growth off at the surface
  • Use the hooked tip for the corners and stubborn spots at the end, once the long joints are cleared
  • Sweep up as you go — leaving cleared debris on the paving lets seeds re-establish almost immediately
  • Finish with a stiff brush over the cleaned joints to remove the fine residue and discourage moss returning

For a really thorough seasonal clean, follow up the knife work with a good sweep and a kettle of boiling water poured along the joints — a chemical-free way to discourage regrowth.

The chemical-free choice

The temptation with weed-strewn paving is to reach for a herbicide. Done well, this knife does the same job without any chemicals reaching the soil, the rainwater run-off, or the bees and beetles that pass through the joints between your slabs. It takes a little more time. It's quieter, less harsh, and rather more rewarding.

Looking after it

Stainless steel and FSC hardwood — properly looked after, this is a tool you'll hand on:

  • Wipe the blade clean after each use, particularly when working in damp conditions
  • A drop of oil on the blade occasionally protects against any pitting
  • Store dry using the leather hanging cord — out of damp sheds and away from condensation where possible
  • The hardwood handle can be lightly oiled (linseed oil works beautifully) once or twice a year to keep it conditioned

The lifetime guarantee says the makers expect this tool to outlast a lot of us. Looked after, it will.

Beautiful Storytelling
Format: Hardcover
In a day and time when gentleness and positive imagination is needed for children, I was moved by this book in the best possible way. The storytelling was restrained and beautiful, allowing the illustrations to carry much of the story. I was truly emotional, in a gentle and grounded way, as I read this story. Every child should have the chance to find their wild side and do it in a safe environment, and this book shows you just how it can feel when it happens. The illustrations are perfect, and gorgeous, and lifted the story up to a new level of enjoyment. I cannot wait to share it with my 6-year-old granddaughter, and I honestly plan to many to give as gifts.

A bit too long to make it a hardcover.
Format: Hardcover
I was a bit disappointed with the illustrations and thought the story stretched a bit.
