Het wormenhotel van Plastia is een compacte compostbak van 38 × 38 × 38 cm, geschikt voor in de keuken of op een andere plek binnenshuis. Hiermee kun je je GFT‑afval omzetten in compost, in het gemak van je eigen huis. Het wormenhotel wordt zonder wormen geleverd.

Om te gebruiken begin je met het plaatsen van bedding (bijv. stukje karton, versnipperd papier, wat aarde) in de bak, daarna voeg je compostwormen toe.
Vervolgens gooi je je GFT-afval in de bak in kleine stukjes en zorg je dat de bak vochtig maar niet drijfnat blijft. Let erop dat je niet te veel afval tegelijk toevoegt.  Na enkele weken beginnen de wormen met het verwerken van het afval. De compost is klaar wanneer het donkerbruin tot zwart is, kruimelig aanvoelt en een aardeachtige geur heeft. Dit is meestal na zo’n 2 tot 4 maanden, afhankelijk van temperatuur en voeding. De wormen verdubbelen zich elke drie maanden, dus je zult altijd genoeg wormen hebben.

Door je eigen organisch keukenafval om te zetten in compost verminder je je afvalberg en hoef je natuurlijk ook minder compost te kopen. Wormencompost verbetert de bodemstructuur van je grond, verhoogt de levensduur van planten en bevordert bodemleven zoals micro-organismen en regenwormen.
