En na Jesenins zelfmoord schreef hij drie schandaalromans. Mariëngofs memoires verschenen postuum onder de titel Mijn eeuw, mijn vrienden en vriendinnen. Op sublieme wijze verbeeldt Mariëngof zijn volwassenwording tijdens roaring twenties van het revolutionaire Rusland. Al kwam in zijn leven 'niets op zijn pootjes terecht', zijn werk heeft vele decennia later niets van zijn poëtische zeggingskracht verloren.
