About the work
This limited edition of yellow rubber mats forms part of a larger work, Matte Module, which was commissioned for the exhibition Early One Morning at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2002. Hovering somewhere between the car-mat and the bath-mat - arguably the two lowest forms of carpeting - Webb displays the mats both independently, laying them on the floors like ziggurats of differing shape, size and permutation, and dependently, using them as a plinth for other works.

About the artist
Born in 1973, London-based artist Gary Webb makes sculpture out of industrial materials and his work often denotes a fascination with fast-paced urban living. Creating works from synthetic materials such as resin, neon and rubber and reworking ubiquitous matter such as glass, plexiglass, wood, sand and metal, Webb often parodies modernism to wry and poetic results - referencing consumer culture and making use of the solid and the open and the soft and rigid to explore new sculptural possibilities.
Webb is represented by The Approach, London.
