A historical investigation into the mysterious bug that wiped out the vineyards of France and Europe in the 1860s - and how one young botanist eventually 'saved wine for the world'.

In the early 1860s, vines in the lower Rh ne valley, and then around Bordeaux, inexplicably began to wither and die. Panic seized France, and Jules- mile Planchon, a botanist from Montpellier, was sent to investigate. Magnifying glass in hand, he discovered the roots of a dying vine covered in microscopic yellow insects. The tiny aphid would be named Phylloxera vastatrix - 'the dry leaf devastator'. Where it had come from was utterly mysterious, but it advanced with the speed of an invading army. As the noblest vineyards of France came under biological siege, the world's greatest wine industry tottered on the brink of ruin. The grand owners fought the aphid with expensive insecticide, while peasant vignerons simply abandoned their ruined plots in despair. Within a few years the plague had spread across Europe, from Portugal to the Crimea.

Planchon, aided by the American entomologist Charles Riley, discovered that the parasite had accidentally been imported from America. He believed that only the introduction of American vines, which appeared to have developed a resistance to the aphid, could save France's vineyards. His opponents maintained that this would merely assist the spread of the disease. Meanwhile, encouraged by the French government's offer of a prize of 300,000 gold francs for a remedy, increasingly bizarre suggestions flooded in, and many wine-growing regions came close to revolution as whole local economies were obliterated. Eventually Planchon and his supporters won the day, and phylloxera-resistant American vines were grafted onto European root-stock. Despite some setbacks - the first fruits of transplanted American vines were universally pronounced undrinkable - by 1914 all vines cultivated in France were hybrid Americans.

Phylloxera is an entertaining, revealing and frequently astonishing account of one of the earliest and most successful applications of science to an ecological disaster.

Wonderful pillow and products!
Color: White, Size: Body
I've been using the Snuggle-Pedic pillow for a couple of weeks now, and it is fantastic. It's soft, but the foam is firm and full. It is clearly extremely well made. Everything from Snuggle-Pedic appears to be top quality, right down to the extra little instructional inserts they include with their products. I also purchased the Zipper Removable Cover to make laundering easier. It's just as well made as the pillow. In fact, it's exactly the same as the cover on the pillow except removable due to the zipper. I'm also using the Snuggle-Pedic Organic Cotton Pillow Case, and it too is extremely well made, soft and comfortable. I was a little hesitant about the pillow case when I saw the picture because it almost looked ... too soft for me, sort of like a fleece blanket. Maybe that was just the way I saw the picture, but it's not actually like fleece. It's very soft and comfortable and does stretch a little as opposed to a regular pillow case, as they say in the description, but in a good way and appears very durable. I was concerned that it would stretch out and twist around the pillow, but it doesn't do that at all. It has stayed perfectly fitted to the pillow. From what I've experienced, everything in the descriptions of the Snuggle-Pedic products is true, and all three pieces work perfectly for me. This is the most I've spent on an individual pillow, but I couldn't be more pleased, and I'm planning to replace all my pillows.

Cool Slumberings
Color: White, Size: Queen
For transparency, I was given this pillowcase to review by Relief Mart. However all views are my own and not biased because of it. I had recently purchased the matching pillow (see my other review) and had the opportunity to try this out. In terms of specs, it's basically made out of the same material as the Snuggle-Pedic Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam Pillow - it even has the same woven design. According to manufacturer claims: 'Soft and Luxurious Kool-Flow® Micro-Vented Bamboo Cover' - The pillowcase material is very soft to the touch, and does have a premium feel to it. It did have a slight 'smell' when it first arrived, however once washed (and air dried) it's not there anymore. 'Unprecedented breathability that allows air to circulate through the pillow' - It definitely keeps a certain 'coolness' and doesn't heat up if you stay in one spot. It makes staying still bearable, as I'm a sleeper always looking for the cooler side of the pillow during the night. As described, it's zippable so you can separately wash it from the pillow, and I can attest that it does keep it's softness and fluffliness after 3 weeks of use. Though I'm very happy with it, there's a couple things to build on in my opinion: - color and texture of fabric. By itself, the look of the pillow makes it seem that there's no pillowcase. So if you're picky about your bedsheets when you make your bed, this pillowcase will probably stick out like a sore thumb. The unsubtle branding and slight off white coloring doesn't help as well. - there's a tag outside the pillowcase near the zipper, and though it doesn't affect it in any way, it can be slightly annoying and aesthetically displeasing as it sticks out a bit. Would suggest placing it on the inside. I would definitely recommend this product, irrespective of the (minor) points above, as this has made my slumbering experience a whole lot better.

Great pillow case from a company that cares!
Color: White, Size: Body
The Snuggle-Pedic Body Pillow Case is GREAT and is the perfect pillow case for their body pillow! Feels exactly like the great material that's on the body pillow (soft and breathable) -- and it fits the pillow perfectly! I love that there's a zipper on it as I don't have to deal with the pillow slipping out of the case at all. The case fits perfectly and is the perfect case for the pillow! I read some other reviews where people said they didn't love that the tag/label was on the opposite side of the zipper on the case. But for me this was a non-issue. I cut the tag off and now there's no issue at all. :) Oh, and I have to give a shout out to Snuggle-Pedic and their company....they are awesome! They did offer me a free case in exchange for an honest review. But this isn't what I think they are awesome for. I find them to be a stand up company that is truly there to support their customers! They include a little note when you get the pillow and pillow case giving you their phone number and letting them know they are here to help if we have any questions. And they send an email as well saying they are available if we have any questions and they gave suggestions on how to care for their products. They are quick to respond and truly lovely people. I'm a sucker for supporting good companies....companies that actually truly care about their customers...and this company is that! I highly recommend this product :)

Excellent Customer Service and the Cover is Perfect
Color: White, Size: Queen
I have already purchased 2 of the pillows that go with the Snuggle-Pedic Zipper Removable Pillow Cover. Neither of the pillows I purchased had a zipper on the pillow cases. I bought my pillows at different times, the oldest pillow's case recently didn't do well in the laundry and got somewhat frayed. Not in too horrible condition, but I'm rather OCD. I admit I panicked a bit, I love my pillows! But then I discovered they sell the pillow cases with zippers that would allow me to replace my pillow case and not lose my awesome pillow. Perfect! I bought one. And, I am happy to say, that's just the beginning of my review. A day after purchasing the seller contacted me and explained how the pillow case worked. I was very pleased and grateful - glad I didn't have to struggle with it then rush back and beg for info. Nope, they had it all laid out and made it super easy. I got my pillow case, replaced my torn one and my Snuggle-Pedic pillow is good as new! Excellent service! Excellent Products! I highly recommend them. Oh, and if you haven't tried the Snuggle-Pedic Pillows you are seriously missing out! As a side sleeper, I couldn't live without mine now! Lanette

Fits like a glove!
Color: White, Size: Queen
I recently had to buy new latex pillows because our old ones were beginning to shred after too many years. The old ones had a really nice cover on them that they came with and lasted as long as the pillows. The new queen size pillows came with a cover meant for a king-size and they were super thin and flimsy. The manufacturer tried to tell me it's so they could shrink in the wash. You can imagine the review I left! I looked at almost every cover Amazon had on the site and decided to bite the bullet and spend more on these. I'm really glad I did. They fit the pillows like a glove and keep the pillowcases from trying to slip off during the night because they're not slick. They're not sticky either and it is easy to put on the pillowcase. They are quite a bit thicker than any other cover I have ever had and do tend to change the density of the pillow just a bit because of it. I'm not having a problem with the change and it is very minor. I will absolutely buy this case again if the need should arise. I can't comment on the allergy stuff because we have latex pillows, to begin with so no allergens. I see people complaining about the zipper and just can't quite understand that but perhaps they changed it before I bought mine. I do have to recommend putting the zipper end into the pillowcase first to protect you from feeling a zipper at night but I do this with any protector not just this one.
